Georgian words, one at a time
Rogor khar: the Georgian “how are you?” — and how to answer it.
როგორ ხარ? (rogor khar?) is “how are you?” — the question that follows gamarjoba in every first conversation. Rogor is “how”, khar is “you are”.
What rogor khar means.
როგორ (rogor) means “how”, and ხარ (khar) is “you are” — said to one person you know. The classic Georgian opener is the pair you have probably already seen in a message: გამარჯობა, როგორ ხარ? — “hello, how are you?”
Asking a group, an elder, or someone you address formally? The ending changes: როგორ ხართ? (rogor khart?). Same question, polite shape.
How to pronounce rogor khar.
- Two words, four syllables: RO-gor KHAR.
- ხ is the “kh” of Scottish loch — a breathy scrape at the back of the mouth.
- The “r” is a light single tap, closer to Spanish pero than to English “r”.
